Realm of the Wahzi
Wahzi are a matrilineal tribal society of hunter-gatherers. They are a unique species of hominin and were the first inhabitants of the Land. Very few Wahzi lived in the fertile river valleys when humans arrived. They prefer to live in the forests – preferably rainforest. As people moved into the Denesoma and Kafrin River valleys, the Wahzi, who are pacifist by nature, retreated into the Vuwahf Rainforest in the southwest of the Land.
Wahzi are primarily vegetarians. They prefer the abundance of fruits, nuts and vegetables found in the rainforest, but they do occasionally eat meat.
By human standards, Wahzi are short-lived: they very rarely live to the age of forty. They are short but stoutly built people and their limbs seem short in comparison to the long arms and legs sported by humans. Each hand, or foot, has four digits, although, like a human, their thumb is opposable and they are a strong and dexterous species. The entire body, including arms and legs, of a Wahzi has a thin covering of dark brown to black hair which has a hint of a dark green luster to it. This hair is not thick like fur. Indeed, their underlying tan to olive-colored skin can be discerned. The hair on their head is just as sparse as that on the rest of their body.
The face of a Wahzi is broad and hairless. They have a pronounced brow under which their inquisitive, dark-brown eyes are deep set.
Humans are unable to speak or comprehend the language spoken by Wahzi. To our ears it consists of a a wide range of grunts, squawks, and wheezing breaths. People and Wahzi are able to communicate through a rudimentary sign language which has developed sufficiently for trade to occur. Some people claim Wahzi are capable of a basic understanding human language, if they are given enough time to learn it by watching and listening.
Today, Wahzi merchants can be found trading in most major cities in the southern duchies of the Cranath Kingdom. The discovery of flame-aura in the 760’s was a huge boon for the Wahzi. Flame-aura is produced when fermented juice from guanto fruit is poured over flame-aura stones. Guanto trees only grow in the Vuwahf Rainforest giving the Wahzi a monopoly on this valuable commodity.
